A Comment on Comments

I've been thinking a fair bit about comments lately.

You see, I love it when I get a new comment and I remember when I first started my blog I was SO excited when I got my first comment I kind of jumped up and down with joy.

Also, I like responding to your comments because it makes me feel like instead of just randomly writing into space, I'm writing to people who kind of end up feeling like part of my life, like friends (and I know those of you who have blogs know what I mean by that) even though we might pass each other in the street and never know it.

When I started this blog I wanted to make sure I knew when I received a comment so that I could respond to it and I also wanted to make sure I could stop spam or mean comments from hitting the site at all. Since, in my first year, I haven't had a problem with either, I found myself wondering if maybe it was time to let go a little bit with my comments. So, as an experiment, I'm taking off "comment moderation" for a while to see how it goes and to see if I like it.

I'm still going to have blogger notify me when I get a comment so that I can respond and stuff, but also, it might be fun for you to read each other's comments throughout the day rather then when I manage to get around to posting them, 'specially since I'm silly busy right now.

So, here goes. Little old me who dislikes change very much and who has a hard time with wanting to control the heck out of everything is going to make a change and let go a little bit. Yay me.

As for the comments themselves, can someone do me a favour and leave a "fake" comment (like, Victoria you're a goof) just so I can try to see if I can delete a comment once it's been left? (Updated to add: Ta da! AbstractJenn snuck in here and fulfilled the fake comment role and I managed to delete her comment, so yay! Thanks Jenn.)

Also, if you're at all like I was when I first started visiting sites, let me clear a few things up: if you're reading through my archives and want to comment on something but think you shouldn't/can't because it was so long ago, please just comment anyway! Or, if you're shy like me and worry that if you leave a comment everyone will know who you are and you'll never live it down, don't worry. Just take a leap and say something, even if it's just to leave an anonymous smiley face kay?

So, in conclusion (wrapping up my speech) thank you to all of you who comment, be it once in a while or all the time, you're my reason for posting! Thanks for keeping me company and all.

I wish us well with our experiment! Ta da!

(Crossing fingers and pressing "publish")

Good, glad I could help. I too found that map funny - I especially love Santa and "they make stuff for us". There are a lot of creative people out there.

Just wanted you to know I enjoy your blog - you have great perspective!

I have a constant battle on my blog to keep spammers out of it. So far, I'm winning.

I generally find that the easier it is for people to comment, the more likely they are to do so, so I hate having to bring in more aggressive anti-spam like comment moderation..

Hope you can cope with the new settings!

Thanks Jenn! And yeah, the "Santa!" was my favourite by far!

And thanks *blush* for the compliment : D

Dominic, I hope it goes well and if ever I get spammers I'll see what to do about that. Right now I'm hoping it goes well and people feel more comfortable about commenting :)

I'm commenting on your post about comments in response to your comment. It gives me a headache to even think about it.

Woo Hoo, freedom from comment moderation! ;)

That is one thing I really like about having my own site that I host. I can use Wordpress and Akismet to block spam, while keeping comments open and if people get rude or something I can block them. (I've only done it once so far in however many years.)

Hope all goes well with the experiment, because I agree it is nice for people to be able to see other comments, freely communicating with each other as well as you.

I think my blog would have to be WAY more popular than it is to bother with the moderation. Even on my other blog, which isn't quite so secret, I've never had a spamming problem...

Maybe that's something I should aspire to?

Likalia, I shall revel in the freedom with y'all! :D

Duchess, that's what I think too, I don't really have the readership to warrant massive spamming! And, not sure I want to. hee

(I know you already had someone do the fake comment thing. I genuinely mean that you are a goof. That's why I like you and your site. And your comments on my site.)

Yay for letting go of comment moderation! I, too, have comment notification, and the few spammy things I've had over the years are always on really old posts, so I can easily erase them and no one's the wiser;>

yeah, so I've been reading through your archives (I started at your first post and I'm reading them in order, I read them before bed, its taken me three? days to get this far) and I wondered if I should comment or not cuz it was so long ago ... but you said I should so I am. Hi. How are you? I can't wait to see what happens to you in the next few years (I mean from 2007 - 2011). But wow, this Smith guy huh? What a heart breaker. How does this play out? This blog is like a good book. I'll be back tomorrow to read a few more months worth. Wow, I sound creepy. You really sound like a couple of my gfs from this city. You even went on holidays at the same time as them. Some of the similarities are uncanny. But I would know if they had a blog, right? Maybe I wouldn't. BUT THEN, you showed a picture of your hand. And now I know that you are not any of my good friends because I don't recognize that hand at all. And that I think is cool on so many levels.

Well Hey Another Single Girl in Victoria!
Gosh, I hope I'm not keeping you up too late with my archives! :)
And, yes, thanks for the comment, hi! I'm good! How are you? ;)
I'd tell you what happens with Smith, but that'd ruin the surprise so. . . yeah.
Maybe I AM one of your girlfriends but I used a hand model? Hee. Nah, it's cool that I remind you of them.
Hope you keep enjoying!

You are keeping me up late actually but thats ok. Somebody should. Well, actually not really, I work and go to school so I should go to bed ... but Idontwanna. I'm doing really good. Nothing much new here since yesterday :) Another level into which coolness inserts itself is that I can remember my gfs hands ... I never tried to remember the details of their hands but yeah I can recall them. Almost as well as I can recall their faces. Weird. I'm gonna go read now. Kbye.
