Brains Are Fascinating

A couple of months ago (?) I was given a keyboard.  Like a piano keyboard (rather than a computer keyboard!)

I've been thinking about piano again these last few years.  Yes, I bought a ukulele - it came up as the easiest instrument to learn and it has been good, but I'm slacking on it and have been for most of covid... weirdly enough?

I didn't want to invest in an electronic piano and then have it fall to the side like the ukulele did so I've been putting it off for years.  While at the same time, feeling like maybe I would play more.  I grew up taking piano lessons after all... it makes sense to me as an instrument and, well, what if?  (I'm not precisely sure what that "what if" is... like what if I have a bunch of songs in me that can't come out but could if I had a piano?)

So this particular keyboard is not a fancy or expensive one but it was free and that made it perfect.

But that's not really the point - just the background.

So yes I ordered some "beginner adult" piano books but I also let myself just sit and noodle around with whatever came up.  Chords, scales, and the odd song or two I remembered.  Like the Charlie Brown Christmas theme song.  And chopsticks or whatever.  Doe a deer.  You know, standard easy stuff.

And then I tried to remember this one song I used to play.  I don't know how I learned it but honestly it was probably my brother who taught it to me.

I knew it was a theme song from a tv show and that it involved some black keys but I could not figure out what it was.

I kept sitting down and trying to remember it but never got close.  Always off.  Always the wrong keys.  I just couldn't get it and it was kind of frustrating.

And then one day, probably two weeks in, I just walked over, turned on the keyboard and remembered.

It was the strangest thing.

I'd been trying and trying for days with nothing.  Then out of nowhere, my brain just remembered.  My fingers just remembered.  It was so odd you guys!

But a great feeling too.  And hopefully doing good things in my aging-every-day brain, you know?

And then came the search for what tv show this was the theme for!  And that took a while too.

"Probably the 80s" was my first thought.  Ok....

"Hospital show?" was my second.

So I went through the few I could think of, even if they were out of the 80s.  ER?  Nope.  St Elmo's Fire?  (Ok that was about a fire hall no?) Wait, St Elsewhere, that must be it!  Nope.  I just kept blanking out.  It wasn't any of the medical shows I could google and I just didn't know what else it could be.

And then again... out of who knows where, my brain went "maybe it was police not hospital?" And that lead me to.... drumroll please......

Hill Street Blues!

YES!  That's it!!!  I was so proud I finally remembered and all the pieces clicked together and yay!

But yeah, brains are cool man.

Because let me tell you, googling "do do do, do do do, do do do do do do do do do theme song" gets you exactly nowhere.  Heh.

Ah, Mike Post was really good at those show themes. Rockford Files, Law & Order, Hill Street Blues, NYPD Blues...

I'm impressed you can play that from memory.

Well now I can only play the very first few bits from memory, the rest, not so much ;)
