Can You Tolerate?

At the end of my last acupuncture appointment my practitioner asked me if I can tolerate mushrooms.

And you guys?  I paused.  Hard core.

Because to be 100% honest, I did not know in what way or what type she meant!

Was she asking me if I could tolerate eating cooked mushrooms used in dishes?  (I can, as far as I know so far?)

Was she asking me if I could tolerate magic mushrooms used for spiritual type purposes?  (I.... did not want to answer this if this is what she was asking.)  Or microdosing of same?  (Currently a lot of research coming out about the positive impact of psychedelics on mental health conditions.)

Or was she asking me about supplements based on special non magical mushrooms?  (I have not tried any but have heard a lot about them.)

So I just... paused while my brain froze because what did she mean!!!???  (I mean she is an alternative type healer so who knows!?)

I must have nodded or indicated some sort of response because she then gave me the name of a mushroom supplement brand and type to try.  That I could get at the local grocery or health food store, so you know not the eating kind and also not the magic kind.

(I hope I didn't blush but I feel like I might have!)

So it turns out that yes I can tolerate mushroom supplements (if that's the proper term for them... dried mushroom types in capsules) but not on an empty stomach.  It took me this weekend to figure that out.  So I can have a supplement with lunch but not at breakfast.  (Knock on wood, so far.)

As for the rest... I haven't been a fan of mushrooms as food, but Jason uses the "plain" white ones a lot so I'm growing to like them.  We've yet to venture out though.  I know they're very popular and good for you.  And I'm seeing if I am ok with them as supplements, and seeing if they help and are worth the added expense at a time when money is tighter than I'd like.  (Than we'd all like, really...)  And, well, for the other kind... that's conversation for another time, and we'll just leave it at that for now.

I like mushrooms in food as a way to add umami without adding a lot of meat, but I know to many folks who don't like them (texture maybe?)

I'm pretty food mushroom naive and really only have those little white button mushrooms in my flavour vault! But even that is growth for me (I used to only "do" mushrooms in cream of mushroom soup!) Not sure what it was/is for me, texture probably has something to do with it?
