I recently started the Foundation series by Isaac Asimov. Yes, after watching the TV shows (which I very much enjoyed, visually and artistically and... uh.. acting...ly but got a bit lost in story wise sometimes.) but also after having really only read one other of his stories (iRobot.)
The strangest thing though was when I opened the book to start reading and my brain sort of went "ahhhhh... home."
I don't know how else to explain it other than saying the writing felt like coming home.
Perhaps it's the age of the book or the style of writing, because it's not as if he's an author I'm hugely familiar with. I have, however, read a lot of "older" Sci-Fi in my life (starting in my youth) so maybe it's a genre with similar styles?
It was just a nice feeling.
Feeling like the writing was comforting me, or hugging me. A bit of a strange thing to talk about perhaps, but it was nice, or is nice, whatever is going on.

There is definitely something familiar and comfy about that 40's and 50's SF (when it's not being overtly racist or misogynistic at least). For me, there's something direct and propulsive about the writing, since so much of it was being done for short stories or novellas. Things happen and the story moves at a pace some of the more "modern" 600+ page tomes just don't do.
Yeah, fair points! (Looking at you Mr R R Martin) ;)
