Red In Tooth And Claw

Out of my window(s) I see a neighbouring building.  I often see and hear crows and seagulls and other birds landing on the roof or walking along the gutters (it's a particular noise you get used to!)

The other day I saw a crow flapping about and so started to pay attention.

There are little "vents" (I'm legit not sure what they are, they come down off of an overhang from the roof) along there and I guess a small bird or two built a nest in one (polite reminder to check your dryer vents on the outside - birds WILL nest in them if they can oh and also clean out your dryer vents - fires WILL start in them if they can!)

The reason I know this is that the crow was trying to get at/in it.

Now I have no idea if there are babies at this time of year (I doubt it) or eggs or anything at all but this crow was trying real hard for whatever!

It wasn't able to 'reach' the nest from the top/above area but it tried that!  And it also tried flying into/onto the nest but there isn't enough space for a big bird like that so this clever crow would land on the far side of the building and swoop-fly to the nest and try to... I don't know what, get at it, and it would knock bits of nest material down and then it would land above and try to figure it out from there.  It was really cool to see, even if a bit "oh no!" feeling.

It gave up after about 10 minutes, as far as I could tell but it really was pretty neat to get to see!  Crow problem solving (attempt) at its finest!
