Oh

I found myself thinking something the other day that I don't know if I've ever really thought about before.

I was looking at a picture of someone's husband's camping trip with his brother and I suddenly wished I had a same sex sibling. A sister.

I think maybe when I was a little girl I wanted a sister, but that thought hasn't occurred to me in quite the same way.

Maybe it's me missing having someone to tell everything to, to bounce my thoughts and feelings and ideas off who would understand because they're a girl, but also because they share the same past as me.

If I had a sister, she'd have grown up with me, and she'd have similar, I imagine, ideas about the world.

So it's a strange thing, missing something I've never had, but I really wish I had a big sister.

I don't have a big sister, I AM the big sister :) But I have a little sister and she is pretty much my favourite person in the entire universe. She and I do have a similar history and a shared understanding of our crazy family dynamics so we never have to explain our actions to each other regarding our mom, for example, because we just UNDERSTAND. But I wouldn't say we have the same ideas about the world, necessarily. My sis is very, very liberal. She's gay and she rides a motorcycle and she basically has the free love mentality of the 60's, and she has pretty strong opinions about politics. I am a lot more conservative than she is. None of that really matters though, we love each other to bits despite our differences.

I have a brother. I kinda wish I'd had a sister too, but..

The "growing up together resulting in similar ideas about the world" idea is one I'd debate. I'm *very* different to my brother... I probably have far more in common with my housemate back home than I do with him, to be honest.

Well, nice to meet you too Life with Kaishon! :D And your sister is lucky to have you :)

Laura, I think maybe I didn't mean so much that we'd think the same way about the world in that way, but more like how you talk about the shared understanding of family and stuff.

From what I understand, Dominic, there's something about the sister-sister relationship that's very special. And, yeah, I didn't really mean "same ideas about the world" exactly, just kind of... a shared history or something. It's hard to explain :)

I am a big sister and I have absolutely nothing in common with my little sister. It makes me sad but we can't even have a conversation. Sometimes I will say something and then she looks at me blankly. Once in a while she will say something which seems to be totally unrelated to what I just said. It's a mystery. We can't even bitch about mom because we don't communicate well. I find it a lot easier to talk to my girlfriends than my sister.
