To The Non-Single Gentlemen

Dear Sirs,

I need you to understand something, and bear with me here because I'm right.

I know it may be against your beliefs and it may impinge on your idea of personal freedom and I know it may go against your need to fight against the man and society's expectations but you need to do me this favour.

If you're married, or as good as married, heck, even if you're engaged to be married? If you're really, totally, completely off the market?

Wear a god damned wedding ring.

You may not have anything to prove to anyone because you and your wife/life partner already know you're committed to each other I mean, hey you've got kids, you bought that house together, what more of a sign of commitment do you need right? But dude? It's not about you.

It's about me and my need to glance at you once, see a ring and move on.

Because if I spend one more day having a crush on a guy who is not wearing a wedding ring and then goes on to talk about his wife/long term girlfriend I am going to lose my mind.

So wear a ring. Please.

Remember, it's not about you, it's about letting the lovely single ladies out there move on and find an *actual* single man to drool over.

Yours frustratedly and with thanks in advance,

I wear one :) I actually lost it for a while (camping trip - rainstorm - long story), and during the days it was missing I was paranoid that people would see me without it.

When I worked in London, I used to look around the underground train at the hands of the guys - and was always amazed how many older guys were either single, or not wearing a ring.

I came to the conclusion that a LOT of people who work in the city are single.

AMEN! I have to say that there is something socially important about it, it says that you are someone's and someone is yours, not in that property way but in a HELLO world I am committed to someone I love and cherish...

It always makes me wonder when I meet married men who don't wear rings. Why? You still looking to play the field, do you still like the thrill of a nice single girl flirting with you?

I have come across this issue more and more and I am at the point where I feel like personally thanking the men who wear rings.

If the ring rule applies to those in committed relationships, married or cohabitating....

Shouldn't those not living together but are dating exclusive wear a ring too?
Women and men alike.

During my first marriage, when things started going downhill and I knew it wasn't going to get better... I took off my rings with the excuse "They get in the way at work"... I think - for me- it was a sign I was ready to move on.

Now, for the 2nd and most awesom marriage: I wear a ring on my left hand. Sometimes it's my actual wedding ring, sometimes it's my 'Mother Ring', sometimes just a plain band. Not because I need to affirm I am married, but for those who may be looking-- Don't look here!

;) Samiantha.

Did you find it again Jonathan? And, perhaps I need to spend some time in London to find me a single man ;)

I think there is something socially important about it SnP, absolutely. Yeah, it's like that "not looking, happily so" kind of idea :)

Anonymous, I think it totally should, yep. For all those who aren't single.

I like how you put it Kas: if you're looking, "don't look here" :D

i think we should institute a law requiring any married couple to get tattoos that will be readily visible by pretty much anyone, regardless of attire, signifying that "this person is married" and to whom they are married...

I mean... as long as we are talking about making it a rule to wear rings, we might as well actually get the job done here....

I'll wear my ring when women wear t-shirts to notify us of their intentions:
married and off the market
single & flirting
married but still flirty
totally committed
and so on

When I was single it was very confusing and men just aren't switched on enough to deal with life if women won't announce their intentions.

Think of it as doing it for humanity.

Definitely, come to London!

Just not at the moment, the weather sucks.

Oh, and if I ever get married, I'll wear a ring. Probably not gold though..

I just don't agree with the fact that "taken" or married people should wear a ring...

If they are in a happy commited relationship, why would they need to wear a ring?

And what about the single guys who are just looking for a fling? How should they tell the world?

What about cute, attractive, funny gay guys that you might fall for before knowing they are attracted to men?

Oh and Ray... as a single girl I can tell you that " it is very confusing to try and deal with men who won't announce their intentions... " :)

So, like a forehead tattoo Charles?

Fair enough Ray. I think everyone should be upfront about it. Hey, I'd wear a "single and looking" t-shirt if I had the guts to! ;)

Oh, and I think I saw a t-shirt once that would go with your news article for pregnant ladies :)

We're in rather confusing weather shape here these days too, Dominic.

Anything to help me out, Chantal! Oooh, and maybe the single guys who just want a fling could have a special t-shirt too! ;)

Obama's gonna put barcode's on all of our wrists by the end of his first term anyway....

We should all get traffic lights implanted into our foreheads. If things get too flirty, red, amber, green are simple signals that we all can get.

Dominic - you're a boffin, can you get cracking on that please.

A friend of mine thought of getting a barcode tattoo once Charles. He was planning on getting one that when you scanned it, gave you an automatic till discount! ;)

Ray, I've always thought a glowing aura of interest level would be totally a good idea! (Plus, I had to look up boffin to make sure it meant what I assumed it meant) :)
