Pout

I don't feel like writing today which maybe means I don't feel like writing this week, it's hard to tell at this point, but anyway, I don't feel like writing.

I tripped while running this week. My foot caught on part of the sidewalk and I knew as soon as it happened that I was going down. Which I did. Hard.

I'm not entirely sure how it happened but I knew as soon as I hit that something wasn't ok. I was surprised to see that my hands weren't scraped up even though I couldn't feel them, but I also knew I couldn't run the rest of the way. So I walked myself home and stripped off, discovering that I had scraped and banged myself up pretty good. Managed to tear up my jacket and shirt and several layers of skin on my elbow and give myself the nastiest bruise you can imagine. The whole thing was embarrassing and I couldn't stop crying and now it's days later and my elbow is still really sore and I'm feeling pretty sorry for myself.

Went to see a doctor to make sure I'd cleaned it properly (yeah, you kind of don't want the bits of road, dirt and fabric left in there) and he told me that it looked pretty clean and he was suspicious that there was a fracture (which wasn't on my radar but boy would that have made a good story) but that he'd spare me the X-rays since there's not much you do to treat an elbow fracture anyway. Dude.

It's weird to have this kind of injury because it sort of feels self-inflicted even though it's really not and I feel dumb about it like I can't tell people how much it hurts because it's not like I was doing anything cool or exciting, I tripped.

So my body's busy healing and I'm helping it out by resting and trying to take care of myself but right this moment I'm tired and grumpy because did you know how often you lean on your elbow without knowing it and did you know how much clothes and things rub on your elbow and so my grumpy and tired me doesn't feel like writing right now.

Hopefully things will feel better tomorrow in a number of ways.

:( Bitching about it will totally help. I promise.

Make up a story that your foot got caught in a dog leash of another jogger and the dog dragged you!!! ;)

Feel better soon.

Hope you're feeling better soon!
...and in my mind falling while running is still a good story to be proud of.

You'll be back to normal in no time! Oh I can relate to your story... wanna hear mine?

I fell off my bike and scraped some skin off my elbow (even though I was wearing a gore tex jacket) pretty bad last year... So embarrassing. yup there was people waiting at the red light at the intersection... this one guy got out of his car to see if I needed help... hmmm no I'm ok, look away please... haha

It was pretty gross actually, pus was seeping out of there for days and I had the worst road rash/burning feeling (not cool when you have to work and concentrate!)

I now have a pretty cool scar and a funny story to tell, even though I was scared of crossing that street on my bike for weeks after it happened haha!

Umm...I totally trip all the time. I've tripped while running several times. One time during 5 o'clock traffic on the busiest road in town...plus I nearly killed my dog in the process.

And even better, I tripped my first week at my new job a couple of years ago. I teach at a university and had just taught my last class. I was walking outside and got the heel of my right shoe caught in the cuff of my left leg. I seriously flew like superman to the ground. In front of a very crowded coffee shop deck, a touring group of prospective students and their parents as well as a student on a motorcycle who stopped to offer to take me to the hospital.

It wasn't funny at the time...hysterical now! I'll bet your running fall will become a better story as you get a little distance from it. :-)

Actually, JS, not only did the dog leash drag me, the dog also ran all the way home dragging me and then dunked my head in its water bowl. How's that sound? ;)

Yeah, I guess it's better than "I fell while getting my 8th beer from the fridge" or something Brad!

Pretty good one Chantal! Ouch!

Oh no Anna! I'm blushing for you! Yikes!

If it makes you feel any better, two days after I came off my motorbike, my brother tripped up playing tennis.

I walked away with a broken collar bone. He was carried to the ER with a compound fracture that required hours of surgery, several plates, and several dozen staples.

Spectacular injuries seem to result from the most innocuous activities!

I'm going to tell you my story to make you feel better because I dunno, tripping while running while perhaps not the norm, I think it's still respectable. You know what isn't? This:

A couple years ago now I was sitting at my desk, working away. I have a tendency to sit with my legs crossed or you know, sitting with one leg bent underneath me (sitting on my foot....what really is a good description of that??? anyway....). I went to stand up and walk away and I fell over. I fell over because my foot was asleep! It was a rather dramatic fall too which involved me almost going through a temporary wall. It was so embarassing. Fortunately, only one coworker actually saw it happen but everyone, I repeat everyone in my office told me I needed to come up with a better story because that's just so ridiculous. It doesn't help that I work in sport either by the way...who trips over their sleepy foot!?!

Also: I now have a constant reminder of the fall because I sprained the soft tissue in my foot so whenever the weather shifts a little here my foot throbs! Yay!!

I hope your wound heals quickly and properly!!

Ouch! Having just got back into running again, I keep wondering about getting some kind of tag to put on my laces - in case I collapse or something while out on my own.

I know it's just paranoia, but it has crossed my mind more than once.

Hi NM! Thanks for saying hi and your blog looks nice :) I hope you enjoy blogging! In terms of tips, I'd just say to try to enjoy yourself and to put aside time regularly to write so you get in the habit. Also, for me, the comments and people who read are so important to me so I'd say to make sure you read their blogs too because then they feel like friends :) Oh, and write as if the people you're talking about may read it some day, that tends to remind you to not say anything you wouldn't say to them personally. Have fun!

Hey Jonathan. Well, apparently "normal" people run with a cell phone! But I never get too far from home so. . . but yeah, a tag's not really that bad of an idea. "If found, please call. . . answers to the name of Jonathan!" I think it'd be cute too :)

And PS. I know! I've been following ;)

I also had a fall while running a few summers ago, funny thing was one of my aunts who lives in a different state was visiting my grandma who lived down the road from me, i happened to pass my aunt while she was out for a walk, she was on her cell phone talking to her husband so we talked for a minute then i ran on ahead of her, about a block down the road i tripped over my own feet and belly flopped onto the road, in full view of my aunt and passing traffic, fortunetly i only suffered a few scraps got up and ran home, got a call from my aunt when i got home, her and my uncle(who got the play by play over the phone) were worried i had hurt myself. Gave my entire family a good laugh!
