Would you ever consider taking a trip on your own? After my divorce in 2010 I signed up for a photography retreat to Tuscany Italy - I travelled on my own but shared the villa with other like minded women. It was something I have never done before and it was amazing! I surprised myself 100 times a day. I have heard of shorter more local kinds of things too. Try it perhaps. I liked it so much I am heading to Africa on a safari next year on my own (for the same reasons friends have kids, spouses etc.) and I am so excited. Good luck finding the break you need.
You know, it's not something I'd ever particularly considered just because of fears. But maybe after my Burning Man experience and getting through all those fears and doing well (!) I could re-consider. Thanks for putting it in my brain ;)
