In your understanding... how do zombies... zombie?
As in, do you think they are a virus? Do you automatically become one when you die or do you have to be bitten to become one? How did they first start?
And why do we assume they're going to make noise? How?
I feel like I've asked this before... perhaps I have...but srsly. What do you think?

The beauty of zombies is that any of that could be true.
I think for them to be scary, it needs to be transmittable like a virus. One zombie isn't something to worry about; zombies that spread and could appear at any moment are a concern.
My preference is that you'd need to be bitten/infected to turn, because that at least gives some hope that you could contain and eventually control the spread. And its the possibility of hope that increases the terror.
I'd assume noise on the premise that zombie continue to "breath", passing air over the vocal chords, even if they don't need the oxygen. The Dawn of the Dead (original) idea that zombies return to doing the most basic things they remember of their living life suggest that the habit of breathing might continue.
I don't know if you've asked before, but I don't think I've answered before.
Have you read the "Feed" series? Probably my favourite zombie novels :)

I really enjoy the backstory/clarity around why and how in the series.
