Concerto

There's a thing going around (well, I've seen it three times now but in a small circle so maybe it's not "going around" all that much) on social media right now where people talk about their concerts.

Most of these people have probably been to WAAAAY more than I have (the people I've seen doing it are working musicians) but I'll play in my own way anyway.

First concert:  Red Hot Chili Peppers (a friend took me for my birthday, it was the first concert I went to by myself, I may have been to something concert like with my parents, but other than RHCP I don't remember!)

Last concert:  Xavier Rudd

Best concert:  That's a hard one.  Probably Roger Waters 2017, but also the last Tragically Hip tour I will never forget becuase we all knew this was the last time we'd see them, and Gord, so... both of them.

Worst concert:  I can't really say I've ever thought "well this was terrible", so I'll say that that last Tragically Hip concert was hard and emotional because we knew it was the last time we'd see them.... (sigh)

Most surprising:  I was invited last minute to a Hawksley Workman concert and I was blown away by his performance (I went in not knowing him well and not expecting anything).  Was also blown away by J. Englishman who opened for Edwin ages ago - he had a MASSIVE amount of stage presence in a tiny space.  I was also surprised by how funny Jann Arden is - I laughed SO much.

Next concert:  I don't know.  I had planned on going to see Roger Waters last year (postponed from 2020 or 2021 due to Covid lockdowns) but that didn't happen and I'm not sure if or when I'll get over the cost s(especially in Vancouver with travel and accommodations) and the Covid risk to go to a concert again.  Not sure who I feel I need/want to see enough to put out what ends up being a LOT of money and to put myself in a gigantic room of people, so right now I don't know.  We'll see, but nothing in the works right now.  (Which is a bummer as I always love live music and concerts and always say I'll do more of it.)

You?  What was your first?  Or last?  Or next?  Or?

First concert - I wish I could remember. First concert I remember hearing was Supertramp in the late 70's. They played an outdoor concert and the sound carried to the park behind my parent's house and I remember sitting on hill listening. I think the first one I went to was Triumph.

Last Concert - The Glorious Sons just before COVID...they are so good live

Best Concert - tough one...Amnesty International at Maple Leaf Gardens with Tracy Chapmand, Sting, Peter Gabriel, and Bruce Springsteen. The last three all did full concerts. It was amazing. Any one of many, many Hip shows over the years (like 20ish of them).

Worst Concert - Neil Young and Crazy Horse because they played 0 of their hits, all just garage grunge...just wasn't expecting that.

Most Surprising - Foreigner at the Ampitheatre. Musicianship was Just.So.Good. And Bob Seger a few years ago at ACC...he hadn't lost a beat and was phenomenal.

Next Concert - who knows. The tickets are so expensive now. Would love to see Springsteen one more time, but not at that price.

Oh my gosh the Amnesty International one sounds amazing and reminds me of one I totally forgot - Farm Aid! Got to see Neil Young (who DID play hits) and Dave Matthews (stunning stage presence) and so many more but I think your multi-concert has me beat, wow!

I was thinking about this some more and remembered the worst opening band ever...it was Snow something and they opened for Chili Peppers. They played something called "Industrial Rock", but it wasn't music...at least to me (and my daughters who were there too). It was a terrible 30 minutes. So bad.

At least the Chili Peppers were awesome and made up for the opening band. Flea was the one that signed the band...not one of his shining moments in my opinion.

Oh dear!

I think the only opening band I can recall right now was when Sarah McLachlan had her "back up" singer(s) perform. Except she didn't have them open the show, which was cool and tricky. ;)
