I was attacked by an orange.
Kinda.
I mean, I was attacking it first but still. (The orange won, but I destroyed it after so... even Steven I guess.)
See, the other day I found my thumb nail was ripping. I have no idea how or why, but a tear was starting in the middle and I knew if I didn't do anything it would catch on something and rip in a really bad and painful way. So I cut the nail down. Not all the way to the bed, but as short as it needed to get to make the rip disappear. Short short.
A few nights later, I wanted (one of the delicious organic Buck Brand) my last orange and so I got it out of the fridge (I know, but I want them to last longer so in they go) and went to peel it.
Now the peel was one of those tough, thin ones (I'd let it warm up a bit but it was still on the cold side) and, well I had no nails to really dig in to start the peel. It was difficult. The skin was thin and tough and I had no nails, especially no thumb nails (the "usual" ones for digging into things at least for me.)
So I DUG hard and peeled the orange bit by bit and I was on the phone with Jason at the time chatting away and not giving the peeling my full attention and at some point something happened and then I was in so much pain I thought I was going to faint.
I actually had to lean down against the kitchen counter, it was bad bad bad, I didn't know what had happened. Was there something sharp in the peel? Was there a cut? I couldn't see any signs of a cut but in my wimpering to Jason over the phone he suggested that the "acid" from the orange got under my nail and that was close enough to what I was starting to wonder and besides I didn't know what to do I was just in such a STUPID amount of pain. Like it was ridiculous for what was going on... maybe orange under my nail? This much pain? WHAT?
Jason suggested I counter the acid with a base so I doused the thumb in peroxide and then filled a little container with salt water and stuck it in there. That helped. Then I took it out. NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE NOPE PUT IT BACK IN OMG. So yeah, that's the story of how I ended up holding my phone with one hand and holding the thumb of my other hand in a thing of salt water for a good ten minutes until things weren't trying to kill me anymore. Y'all? SO much pain, really, like nearly faint, brain went numb kind of pain with a background noise of "nothing happened, why is this hurting *this* much!?"
I bandaged it for work the next few days and to press on the top of that thumb by the still short nail still hurts, so I'm really not entirely sure what happened but maybe when I was trying to press into the orange peel some of it got under the short nail and did something to the skin under there and then some orange "acidic" juice got in there but omg wow.
Which got me to thinking. Why do we have such a weak area on our toes and fingers anyway? Like why aren't all of our fingers just... finger? Why the HOLY COW THAT HURTS spot covered by a nail? What was going on with evolution and that, eh?
But yeah, wow, 0/10 do not recommend.
Oh, and yes, I ate the orange. It was good. (But I feel like I'm a little orange gun shy right now! Whimper.)

A spoon is your best friend for peeling an orange. Trust me.
Sorry the orange won.
Will google! ;)
And it may have won, but I did kind of have the last word :)
