Someone at work the other day (don't talk about work) said that I "really like to do things the right way" or something like that (the implication being something along the lines of I want/like very black and white things so that I can do what I am exactly meant to and not be "wrong".)
So, like... am I wrong here? Is it not, are we not... meant to do things a certain way as someone has decided that is the "right" way to do it?
I'm not talking about subtle things, I'm talking about like if you have to check off a certain number of boxes on that piece of paper I'd like to know many boxes I'm supposed to check off and on what timeline. Like do I have until Friday to check off all five boxes? Or do I need to check off five boxes a day?
I get that I'm often rigid in my thinking and perhaps there can or should be some wiggle room there, and I know I'm not giving any of you enough information to give a helpful answer but that statement really has me thinking.
No, I don't like "screwing up" and I try to find the answers to questions that I think are unclear like "check off the boxes". What boxes? How many? By when? And sometimes even "what do you want my check mark to look like?" I'm sure some people (or at least I imagine) use a highlighter to swipe the boxes and they do however many they want by whatever timeline they want and probably they don't lose their jobs but I'm not sure how I manage to be someone who just does whatever seems right to me within the parameters I've been given.
Maybe I should be a "legal speak writer" (I'm sure there's a proper job title for that) who makes sure things are worded clearly enough that there can be no confusion (people look over contracts and find loopholes, right?)
But yeah, I know my system likes black and white clarity and I know that life is really really not made up of black and white clarity, so maybe there's some room for me to grow and find some ease here but I'm not sure where to look or where to start.
Are we not all "supposed" to be doing our paid work as properly as possible?

Being a nerdy accountant...and one that has worked in tax in his career...YES!! Everyone needs to understand the policies/procedures and follow them to their best of their abilities and do their paid work as properly as possible. Checking off boxes, or whatever other activity is the subject du jour, likely has a very good reason to be done in that manner because somewhere, someone is trying to limit risk and exposure of potential losses to the entity.
Now I have Somebody's Out There running through my head...damn. At least it's a great band...time to fire up that playlist...
SEE?? It MATTERS!!!!
And sorry for the unintended earworm ;)
