Play Ball

I haven't particularly followed sports in a while, although I used to watch Canucks games "back in the day" (pre riot... that was just embarrassing) and occasionally some baseball or tennis or whatever.

I think I stopped when it was no longer a social thing (friends who'd make it into a social thing had kids) and of course not having cable and then just not really caring all that much if I'm honest.

Jason, it turns out, is a big baseball fan, and last year I watched the end of the MLB (Major League Baseball) World Series (not really the world but I digress....) and enjoyed (stressfully enjoyed) it well enough and kind of got attached to the LA Dodgers team and some of their stories.

Fast forward to this year and Jason chose to share his MLB online with me and so I've been able to watch games from home (and at his place.)

I'm enjoying it well enough.  It's a little weird for me to be back watching sports after quite a long time of not watching them.

I get stressed/nervous from time to time.  I maybe have cried at certain things.  (No comment)  It's been nice to be watching a game at my place and texting with Jason about the plays - a modern version of socializing I suppose, but it is a connection I'm enjoying - something positive and light we can share.

I have issues with sports (the money put in to them) and so have told Jason we'll just not discuss that.  I'm not into the stats and don't really understand them anyway.  I like the stories about the players and I do enjoy the commentary during the games.

I can't watch a whole lot of games though.  They do tire me out and so one game a night/day is about all I can manage.  And I can't keep up with all the games. (OMG SO MANY GAMES!) and not every game is available always (blackouts?  I could probably google the why of that but... shrug)

So I'm following the LA Dodgers and then the Blue Jays (who have always been "my" team I guess...) and then I suppose the Mariners (close enough to feel "local") and we'll see as the season goes on.

What I like about following one (or maybe two) team(s) is getting to know the players.  And rooting for them.  Like I have a favourite who's my favourite just because he seems like he's a nice guy.  Sure, he's good at his game but I just like him!

So, yeah.  I guess I'm watching baseball this year.  At least so far.  We'll see how it goes and how "my" team(s) does/do.  It is nice to have something else to take my mind off of the bullsh*t in the world though, that's for sure.  (And a lot of the good tv shows I was distracting with have finished and I'm about done with this book series so if it's a distraction for now?  That's fine with me!)
