I have a few fans in my place, both to move the air around and to blow some air on me (dreamy sigh.)
I also have some noise sensitivity from time to time and am also pretty conscious of not bothering my neighbours in this thin-build apartment building and so after rolling over one night early this summer and hearing the tower fan I had pointing at my bed HOPING against hope it would cool me enough to let me sleep in the heat (it was quiet enough?!) rumbling through the floor, I decided I should look in to ways to hopefully not be sending rumbling noises down to my neighbours.
(I mean, honestly, I have no idea if they're hearing my fans but I would rather be on the overly cautious side of that.)
So I looked in to something like noise reducing or anti vibration pads and when I got them, I put them under my two big box fans and told myself that even if I couldn't hear a difference in noise that it was probably helping reduce any rattle my neighbours might be hearing.
After a few days of using these pads, I heard a loud BANG one afternoon. Went to investigate and the fan in my bedroom had like wobbled off the pads and fallen backwards. Whoops!
I was really glad I was home when this happened as my imagination ran away with the thwarted motor overheating and causing a fire and the worst case scenarios so yeah, I was glad I was there to deal with it and get to the fan right away. It still technically turned on but the blades didn't work so I unplugged it and put it aside.
Thankfully it wasn't going to be too too hot the next few days so I figured I could manage with out that one fan. (And honestly, at the end of the day I don't know if the box fans are really doing much at all in terms of cooling but they sure are noisy, you know?)
I messaged Jason and asked if he wanted to take a look at the fan (with me, as I like to look at things and maybe learn) or if I should just throw it out/recycle it and he said sure, bring it over. So I loaded it into its box (I keep them for storage purposes) and a few days later took it over to Jason's.
We hauled it out of the box and I explained that the motor still engaged and so he plugged it in, and turned in on and wouldn't you know it the damn thing WORKED!
I looked at him and must have had just the most stunned look on my face because I had tried *bashing* the fan a bit in case the blades were just a little off kilter and I was like "I swear, it wasn't working!!!!" and then I said "do you really think me throwing it upside down in a box and putting it in the back of my car and driving it over here was enough to fix whatever was wrong?" and Jason kind of shrugged and said well I mean maybe?
But y'all how many people (myself included if I didn't know someone handy with tools and fixing things) would have thrown out the fan just like that? I mean I nearly did out of frustration (and a lack of patience and knowledge about fixing things.)
In the meantime, I'd already purchased a new box fan and so I told Jason he could keep the fan but to be aware it had broken once so maybe be cautious about using it and that maybe we could/should take a look at it anyway just in case?
But yeah, that fan totally played dead until I had someone else look at it, what a sneaky little thing, eh? Heh.
