This photo is exactly what I'm feeling right now.
A dude wearing red socks.
Totally.
That's my life.
Odd.
Can't decide if it's wrong or awesome.
For one thing, I can not get over how light it is around 7 pm now. I *know* that's the point of the whole Daylight Savings Time Whatnot, but still... it's bizarre to me. Or maybe it's that plus being back at work after being far far away. Added on to the week before that being the time change week (which was evil) and did I mention the guy (yeah, slipped that one by ya, didn't I) ?
Right.
I'm a little dazed and confused. (Which, by the way, happens to be the title of one of my favourite movies. And a song by the greatest band EVER!)
I'm trying to figure out where to start with it all... and how to explain it all... the holiday... the guy... the brain melt that's now in its third week... but I've only been back three days so I'm just catching up on work and sleep. (Er, and I might have been on the phone a lot to The Other Side of the Country. Maybe. I forget. Ahem.)
So for now, I'll just sit here and wonder if this dude meant to wear red socks or if he just didn't have any other clean ones or if he just didn't care. I kind of hope it was the latter. Life must be easier if you don't care. Yes?
I don't know. I wonder though.
As for me, I'll be wearing black socks tomorrow.
That much I know.
Just me. Thinking thoughts, living life, figuring it out as I go along.
And, no, I don't really know what I'm talking about.

Hi
I'm home.
The cherry trees are all a-blossom!
I'm a little dazed.
Any way I can skip going back to work tomorrow?
How are you? Did you have a good week?
I did.
I have no idea what time it is.

Auto Reply: WOO HOOO!
Dudes and dudettes,
I hereby announce that I am going on a well-earned vacation for a week to relax and recharge and other re-words.
(Does re- drink- umbrella- drinks count as a word?)
I'm the luckiest girl in the world so I won't rub it in too much.
I'll be in a sunny, sandy, happy place and I promise I'll try my best not to miss you!
Please check out some of y'each other's sites. (I just made up a word... it's "y'all" combined with "each other's"... I rock) And don't forget my links. And if you still need something to do, go add to this list. It's addictively right up my alley.
I'll approve comments when I get back, so don't think you're insane if your comment doesn't appear for... like..ever, kay? I mean, if you want to think you're insane for other reasons, that's your business, just don't blame my poor site!
OK. I'm getting giddy, I should go check I've packed my passport. Again. In case it's managed to remove itself from my bag.
Because I am insane.
Talk to youse soon,
Be good, play nice, have fun.

Take 'Er Easy
Forgive me if my brain hasn't been functioning lately.
That Guy is visiting right now.
From the other side of the country.
He's been here for long enough that my brain has left the building.
I have to go for now, he's just made me dinner.
Yup.
So, look at this hilarious photo instead.
I'll be back as soon as I find out where my brain went.

If Only I Could Do It and Not Just Think It
Some things are going to happen whether we struggle and fight against them or help them along.
So, isn't it easier to just enjoy the ride?

Yes, I'm a Girl

Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered
I asked a friend of mine what he'd like to know about single girls. Like, what burning questions did he wish he had the answers to? And then I got curious, so I asked a couple more single guys what they wondered about.
Turns out single girls are just as confusing to guys as single guys are to girls. I think most of us kind of knew that already, but to play along with my own game, let me attempt to answer a few of their questions. Some of them were great questions that will most likely come up in a future post, but for now, here's a few that were quick to answer. Keeping in mind that I am merely one single girl out of many.... many single girls and that the opinions expressed here do not necessarily reflect those of other single girls out there. (At this point in a DVD I'm wishing I could just fast forward to the menu already, you know?) So, here goes.
Do girls like to look at themselves in the mirror? In general, no. Most girls do not check themselves out in the mirror the way some guys do. You know... "dude, my pecs look sweet today". For some girls, looking in the mirror isn't much more than a reason to find and pick on personal flaws. Personally, I look in the mirror to check for glaring mistakes, like Oreo cookies stuck between teeth or smudges of chocolate on shirt.
Is it more important that I find the girl funny or that I'm funny to her? Well, I'd say that they're both equally important. Most people I know are with their partners, in part, because they make them laugh. I think most girls would appreciate a guy who can make her laugh and would hope that she can get a chuckle or two out of him. I guess if I had to choose, I'd say that it's more important that she finds you funny. Because, really, do you want to spend a lot of your time, maybe even the rest of your life, with someone who doesn't laugh with you? Not really. ( Also, please notice I did not say laugh "at" you. With.) I think it's really important to add though, that trying super hard to be funny is going to work against you. Intelligent people are funny and because funny is such a personal thing, there will be a girl out there who laughs at you even when you're really not trying to be that funny. That's the girl you want to grab. (Figuratively, of course. Grabbing a relative stranger doesn't go over very well)
What kind of men do women fantasize about? Dude. There is just no way I can answer this one. It's so damn individual. Really. You know that saying "one man's garbage is another man's treasure" or whatever? Yeah, it's something like that. One woman's hot fantasy fodder is another woman's dull and dreary or creepy. I'm not sure it's even as simple as saying women like to fantasize about hot men. Some women fantasize about a guy who always remembers to put the toilet paper roll so the paper comes from above, not underneath. It takes all kinds, my friend.
Should I ask a girl for her phone number or her email? This is an interesting one, and I'm really only speaking for myself here. I'd be much more comfortable giving my email to someone. It allows me the space I'm comfortable with. It lets me suss out what the guy's like before I decide to give him my phone number. Plus, I can get kind of tongue tied on the phone so an email lets me collect my thoughts. I just think it sounds more casual. "Why don't you give me your email and we'll get together sometime." Rather than "Hey baby, what's your number and how would that dress look on my bedroom floor?" I think it depends on the guy's comfort level. Asking for a phone number is much more direct and I think it more clearly defines your intent. (ie. I want to possibly date you)
And while we're on this topic, should I ask for her number/email or offer her mine? Ask for hers. She'll be flattered. Once you have hers you can then offer yours if you'd like. "Why don't I give you my number" always sounds to me like some kind of business deal.
Why don't girls cook for themselves well? Who says they don't? Unless you mean me and in that case it's quite simple. a) I never learned. and b) I can't be bothered. I dunno. I'm maybe the exception to the rule. I'm not the most domestic of women. Don't really sew, don't really cook. I make up for it with my charming personality and by batting my eyelashes a lot. Or, maybe my complete lack of wifely skills is the reason I have not yet been snapped up, and, yet, you don't see me rushing off to a culinary course or knitting baby booties do you? (Heh.) I'm sure there are lots of single girls who cook well for themselves.
Do they ever let their bedrooms get as messy as boys? No. As messy as I've seen some girls' bedrooms, I have never met a girl who allowed their bedroom to get as messy and stinky as a boy's bedroom. Plus, it states on page 324 of our Girl Manual that we can't reach that state of disarray and must maintain a bedroom where human beings can breathe the air without passing out or turning green. (Whoops, I'm not sure I'm allowed to publish that info.)
Umm.... why it is that they are only interested in me when at least one of us is unavailable? Maybe knowing the other person is unavailable makes them more attractive ? (Wanting what you can't have.) Or maybe some people have issues with commitment and are only interested in people they know they don't really have to ever be in a relationship with? (Safe.) My Mom has a theory that when one is in a relationship, one is happy and relaxed, therefore being more attractive to members of the opposite sex. I think she's got a point. It may also explain what people keep saying about "you find that special person just when you've stopped looking" Because when you stop looking, you relax. So, invent yourself an imaginary girlfriend so that the ladies will flock to you but you won't have to really break anything off with anyone! ( Unless your imaginary girlfriend takes on a life of her own and starts stalking and harassing you. In which case, move.)
There. Advice from a single girl.
And now I turn it over to you! Guys, what have you always wondered? Gals, what would you have said?

Jumping to Conclusions
Twice this week (or, last week, actually) I may have over-estimated what was happening in a situation. Involving a guy. Two situations involving two different guys. Two dissimilar situations.... sorry...anyway....
The first was when an intern who is being assigned to me (cuz apparently he'll learn stuff?) for a week or two asked if I'd like to "Go for coffee. (pause) To discuss the training that's coming up and what's expected." And I was all "Sure." While thinking to myself (because we all know how much I like to think.) Hmmmm, is he asking me for coffee or is he asking me for "coffee" as in, you know "hey, let's go for coffee"? So I got a little weirded out and asked my supervisor what he thought and realized later that maybe the guy was just asking to hang out and talk about what he'll be doing while working with me. (I nearly said under me but I stopped myself...heh.) Who am I to know? I just automatically assumed it was a flirting/dating situation when maybe it wasn't at all.
The second time was at the gym. I was stretching with my earphones in when I heard "Miss, excuse me miss?" Seeing as I was the only other person in the room I figured the guy in question was talking to me. He was a few years older and spoke with an accent (which, yes, is relevant in this situation.) He asked me if I did yoga and then proceeded to ask me a few questions about where and when. I found myself uncomfortable because, again, I assumed he was trying to strike up a conversation with me in order to ask me out or to tell me what a supremely hot chick I was and could he have my number. It wasn't until I'd stuck my headphones back in my ears for the third time that I realized that maybe he was just trying to be friendly and I was doing the typical North American thing; assuming the worst. I remember when I came back from Mexico a couple of years ago being shocked at how unfriendly everyone in Canada seemed. I'd just spent a week in a country where everyone smiled and said hello and struck up conversations with ease. And I'd loved it. I got off the airport in Vancouver and started smiling away at everyone, ready to shout out a hello here or there and I realized almost everyone had their heads down or was avoiding eye-contact, lost in their own world.
So I ended up with two things on my mind:
1) Maybe I'm over-assuming that guys are trying to hit on me when they're actually just trying to talk to me.
And
2) Why are we so afraid to talk to each other. To just talk? To be friendly?
But it's hard. The times I have assumed the other way; "Oh, he's just being friendly" it's turned out I was wrong and the guy was wondering why I wasn't picking up his signals.
Maybe this all goes back to my male friendship thing. That elusive experience I can not quite master or figure out. Or maybe I'm just crazy.

I Saw You Standing Alone
So, apparently I missed a lunar eclipse this weekend. The photos are all over flickr and I'm a little bummed I didn't know it was happening.
Turns out I most likely wouldn't have seen it anyway, but still.... I'm pouting a little, and mooning about. (Guffaw)
Stuff like that is super cool. I remember seeing a solar eclipse many moons ago (Ha!) when I was in Hawaii and it was a really cool thing to witness, so I'm envious of the parts of the world that did get to see the total eclipse of my heart. Er, I mean...the moon. (Dude.)
I'm feeling a little better now, though, since I googled the eclipse and read this from a Canadian news source: "If you did happen to miss the celestial event, another total lunar eclipse is predicted for late August and will offer the best visibility on the West Coast of Canada."
Excellent! Hopefully, I'll get to see this one this time.
These things only happen once in a blue moon, you know!

Sweet Dreams
I always stop and read the wishes and dreams people have chosen to share and this particular one, written by a child, or so I like to imagine, echoes exactly what I feel and wish for all of us. I had to take a photo of it.
I too wish that every one will have a happy life and be happy.
Forever.
It's all I've ever dreamed of.
I sure hope you're having a good day!

Innocence is Bliss
I was standing at the bus stop in Grade 7 when this kinda mean boy from our class came up to me with a nasty look on his face.
"So. Do you know what a blow job is?" he grinned.
The rest of my friends had gone into Dunkin' Donuts to buy a donut for the ride home (I always got those ones with the strawberry jelly filling and the sugary outside) so I didn't have anyone to turn to for backup. And, of course, being 12, I didn't know I could just ignore him and walk away.
I can't remember what I said to him, but I remember him laughing at me and asking me if I knew why it was called a blow job when it wasn't about blowing at all.
I found the whole thing terribly embarrassing and humiliating, but I've never been sure if it was because I didn't know what he was talking about or because I thought I should know what he was talking about.
Either way, it was far too young to have to start to wondering why it was called a blow job if there really wasn't any blowing going on and, what, exactly, was the reason anyone would want to do that anyway? I was pretty sure it was only something prostitutes would do.
I mean, seriously. Who'd do *that* on purpose, right?

Peer Pressure
Things are happening right now, man. "Things." Grown up things.
So many people I know got engaged recently. Like, yesterday, or last month, or at Christmas. And the people who weren't getting engaged were getting pregnant. Or doing what it takes to get pregnant so they could announce their pregnancies while everyone else was done announcing their engagements.
It's one thing to be single when people are getting engaged. You're happy for them while simultaneously wishing it was you all happily in love, but there's usually a sense of "someday".
It's another thing to be a woman who isn't planning on having a baby when everyone else seems to be announcing their pregnancies.
See, I have a couple of girlfriends, both happily married, who have chosen not to have kids and they're happy with their decision. As are their husbands. The only problem they have is with their friends and family. And the whole, entire world.
It was one thing to deal with peer pressure in high school when all your friends were drinking and you didn't want to, but how frustrating to have to deal with people expecting you to do something just because you have the physical capability to do so.
I don't know if my life will lead me to a place where I'll have children, but I do know I'll go through the stages of questions from some people.
I already get asked the inevitable "So? When are you getting married?" or "Why aren't you married ?" that women over a certain age hear from time to time. (Or, all the time from those distant relatives who mean well)
And I'm sure that once I meet Mister Perfect, the question will subtly change to "When are *you two* getting married?"
I also know that once I'm happily ensconced in my ever-after marriage, the question will become "So. When are you two having kids?" or "How long til we see some little ones running around?"
I know there's a natural, typical progression of things. I used to sing the songs in elementary school myself; you know "Fred and Suzie sitting in a tree, K-I-S-S-I-N-G. First comes LOVE, then comes MARRIAGE, then comes a BABY in a BABY CARRIAGE!" I know what our society thinks boys and girls are supposed to do: You kiss, you fall in love, you get married, you have a baby. End of story. I *know* many many people are very happy doing just this.
I just wish people were more sensitive.
I wish people had a different fallback question when talking to women, whether they're single, married, child-less, engaged, or what.
I would just like to see my girlfriends who don't want to have children not have to constantly defend their choice, to just be able to live happily ever after just the way things are.
Life happens. Growing up happens. People get engaged. People get pregnant. Let's just not assume that everyone is going to. And let's accept that not everyone wants to.
Enough with the pressure.

Sounds Like Somebody's Got a Case of the Mondays
Do you know what's funny? I don't think I hate Mondays as much as I'm supposed to.
I think it's mainly because I'm half asleep for most of the day.
Also, I tend to wake up on Mondays and think "Woo hoo, five more days til the weekend!"
Somehow it's Tuesday that kills me.
Thursdays are a little rough too.
I tell ya, I sure like Saturdays though!
Bueller? Bueller?*
*Yes, I've lost my mind. It's OK.

So?
So, when does the "guy you're seeing" transition to "your boyfriend"? Or.. girl to girlfriend...for that matter.
When do you start thinking about that person as your significant other? When do you start talking to your friends about your boy/girlfriend?
Is there a time line? Is there an event? Is it different each time?
So. Those of you with boyfriends or girlfriends. When did you do it? When did they become that? And why?
Don't you think it would be easier if we could exchange Letterman jackets or class rings.
Wait. Do people still do that and I just don't know?

Table Talk
So what's the protocol with workplace dating?
And, no, before you jump to conclusions, I'm not trying to date someone at work ( we super secret spies don't really date each other, it's all too "Mr and Mrs Smith" ) I'm just curious.
See, a couple of months ago, I went in for some massage therapy. The masseuse I ended up with was this really nice younger guy and I found myself wondering: what would this guy do if he wanted to ask me out? (One allows one's mind to wander when one is having one's back rubbed, leave me alone.) Could he? Would he?
Probably not, right?
But it must happen.
So where there's that sort of relationship, what happens if someone wants to try changing the dynamic? It's obvious that the client-type relationship would have to end, but.... maybe it'd be worth it for some people, to take that risk, that chance.
Are there some jobs where it's more... or less appropriate? Like, is a massage therapist OK, but a dentist not? Is a hairdresser off limits or not? What about... I dunno, your pharmacist or your gynecologist?
Now, don't over-react my lovelies, I'm not trying to date a masseuse. ( Although, the back rubs would be worth it, no? ) Just one of those thoughts that found itself rattling around in my otherwise empty brain.
I'd just hate to think someone would let someone great pass by just because of social expectations and protocol.
But then again, maybe those things are there for a reason.

Insane in the Membrane
The reason I can tell it's a super busy time at work is that I spent all of this weekend doing really pointless things that I've been CONVINCED I had to do. Like? Oh, making sure all of the photos in my archives linked properly to my flickr account.
Yep. Very important. Had to be done.
Why does my brain do that? Does yours? Do you completely distract yourself from what really needs to get done with little things that could get done but really don't need to be? Or am I just crazy?
I know. I should probably write a post about how crazy busy I am instead of doing any work! That's an awesome idea!!!!!!! Wheeeee!

To the Older Gentleman at the Gym the Other Day
Dear Sir,
I'm not sure if you were aware (but on the other hand, I do not see how you could not have noticed) but when you came over from your side of the stretching room to stand over where I was lying, I had to turn my head away so as to not be looking directly up your shorts.
See, you had a perfectly clear spot of wall right next to where your mat was, you really didn't need to walk alllll the way across the room to stretch your hamstrings, did you?
Now, I'm not sure if this is an old-fashioned courting routine that I just don't have a clear understanding of, but, um... well, yeah.
I wasn't sure how I was supposed to react, but if you could just be a teeny bit more aware of your own personal space and the space of your shorts, I'd really appreciate it.
'Kay, thanks!

To My Romance-Novel Husband To Be*
Ok, so I've got to ask, my handsome, kilt-wearing, long-hair tied back, future husband with the strong arms and romantic words...
Where are we going to meet? The rolling hills of Scotland? A ship in the ocean? Atop a field of golden wheat?
What are you going to rescue me from?
What dastardly situation are we going to have to work through?
And, most importantly, when am I going to realize that the attraction I've been fighting is really a deep love for you and all you stand for?
* Come on, tell me you're not in love with Jamie** too.
** OK, I totally cracked up when I found that site, but the Outlander books are really a great series. Really.
PS. I'm not really a big romance novel reader, but they're good when you just want to smile and not really think.

To The Girl Who's Engaged to That Guy
Honey?
Your man just tried to pick me up.
And when I said no, he moved on to the next girl.
It's you who should be moving on.
Quickly.

Happy... er... Wednesday?
For all those of you who are single and hating this day with all its happy couples and romance and why don't they just make a big sign pointing to me that says not everyone is happily married or engaged or even in a stupid relationship because I'm still single?
For all of you? Here's my advice. My thoughtful, sensible, knowing advice.
Just remember... before you even know it? In just a day or two? Well...
Just know, that a day or two from today, all the chocolate will be on sale and then who'll be laughing, huh?
You! That's right! You with your piles of inexpensively bought chocolate that you don't have to share with anyone! It'll be yours, all yours! (evil wicked laugh)
( I especially like trying to bite into the giant Hershey's Kisses. It's like an orgy of chocolate awesomeness. )
Happy Feb 14th, folks.

Fired
You know that feeling you get when you're instantly, powerfully, physically attracted to someone? When you look at them and without quite being able to put your finger on it, sometimes, you just have this animalistic attraction?
You know... that "rawr"?
I love it when I get that feeling, and I've always trusted that it meant something good. Maybe that the pheromones were right, or maybe that the other person was feeling the same way about me.
I don't always act on that "rawr" feeling. Maybe if I'd been a free-love child in the 70s, I might have gone around making love, not war, but I do take note of the feeling, and more often than not, I'll point out to my girlfriends that that particular guy right there is definitely not someone I'd kick out of bed.
Case in point: about a year ago, I was introduced to a well known, local musician. He's a talented fellow, ten or so years older than me, and he has the looks about him of a Keith Urban; not quite clean shaven, rough around the edges, a little bit worn, really not my type.
But man. This guy's a "rawr" if I ever met one. Big time.
I shook it off the first time I met him, because, really, he's not someone I'd ordinarily be attracted to, and well, he just shouldn't have had that effect on me. I struck it up to the G&Ts and the music and his obvious talent.
When I ran into him again last summer, I knew for certain that he was in that category of people, who for whatever reason, just set off something in my brain. Or, more to the point, set off something *not* in my brain.
Later in the summer, I was sitting around with some girlfriends talking about guys and attraction and all those good, girlfriend-talk things. We started talking about guys we wanted to sleep with, and I brought up this fellow's name. There was a lot of nodding and smiling, and more than a few of my friends admitted that they too found him strangely attractive. We were laughing a lot about this when my friend's Mom joined us at the table. She told us that she'd known this fellow for years and she, too, had felt that he was an unreasonably attractive man.
And then she said something interesting. Something slightly mood killing.
She said that she believes that that "rawr" feeling is the result of two people with equal neuroses meeting. She said that when you feel that instant, hot heat of attraction you should avoid it because it's something in you recognizing that you've met someone just as messed up as you are. Or, at least, messed up in the same ways that you are.
I'm not sure if this is the case with this musician, seeing as so many of the women I've talked to find him alluring and attractive, but it is something to ponder. Some of my least healthy relationships started with a very strong, very quick, physical attraction.
But, maybe it's all just co-incidence. My most healthy relationships also started out with that instant, intense physical attraction.
I'm a strong believer in chemistry and pheromones and things that we don't fully understand.
And I'm not worried about meeting someone "as messed up" as I am. I'm quite happy with my state of messed-up-edness and I think I'm aware enough of my strengths and weaknesses that I could happily find myself in a relationship with someone who had the a similar psyche.
Besides, I'm not about to get into a relationship where there's no "rawr" at all. I mean, what would be the fun in that?
So, here's a question for you: Is that intense, initial physical attraction something to follow, or something to run away from?
You know... that "rawr"?

Dude, That Was Weird
OK, so remember that time when I had that weird money thing when everything I bought just kept on coming out to even numbers or like, sixty seven dollars and sixty seven cents and stuff like that?
Well, get this. I was just "balancing" my checkbook ( I say balancing lightly because, come on, there's no balance.... it leans very heavily one way ) and the amount I spent on groceries just now was exactly what was left in my account. Leaving me with exactly zero dollars and zero cents. (Don't worry your pretty little heads, I've got a line of credit and overdraft protection and all that fancy grown up stuff. *pats self on back*) How weird is that? Spending EXACTLY how much you have left in your account without even knowing it ( I had made other purchases earlier..... mmmmm... books) I mean, who gets their account to exactly $0.00? Cool!
Maybe I should be on Lost, what with my super cool number co-incidences and stuff. Maybe I should be the character who gets to get it on with Desmond and his accent! What a great idea!
PS I promise I'll spend less next month kay?

The Mind is a Strange and Wonderful Thing
As I was in the shower this afternoon, out of nowhere, the poem suddenly started running through my head. So, here, for you to enjoy is one of the classics that has always rung true for me and which apparently, still resides, unforgotten, in the recesses of my mind.
Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening
Whose woods these are I think I know,
His house is in the village though.
He will not see me stopping here,
To watch his woods fill up with snow.
My little horse must think it queer,
To stop without a farmhouse near,
Between the woods and frozen lake,
The darkest evening of the year.
He gives his harness bells a shake,
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound's the sweep,
Of easy wind and downy flake.
The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

To the Guy Trying to Pick Me Up in the Hotel Elevator in Regina*
Dude,
"You sure clean up nice" is not going to cut it as a pick up line.
Seriously now. Get in the game.
* Don't panic y'all, I didn't say what you thought I said. I said REgina. Regina.

Have You Ever Wondered?
Have you ever wondered why they call it "falling" for someone?
Is it because it's scary as hell and you can't see it coming?
Is it because you can't stop once you've gone over the edge?
Is it because it makes your stomach feel the way you feel in a really fast elevator, where your body's going down but the rest of you is staying still?
Or, is it because, if you just relax and enjoy it, you'll realize it's an amazing thing?

Just in Case You Were Wondering
Apparently they only make two types of Valentine's cards.
1. Funny ones that make a sex joke.
Ex. You're hot and I want to sleep with you, happy Valentine's Day!
or
2. Ones that scream out your undying love.
Ex. FOREVER WILL I LOVE YOU! I LOVE YOU FOREVER. SO MUCH. LOTS!
What about the good old "be mine?" Huh? What about that? Doesn't anyone just ask someone to be their Valentine anymore.... like in the good ol' days?
Cuz maybe not all of us single folks want to make sex jokes or profess undying love quite yet.
*Grumbles at the marketing geniuses who ruined yet another holiday.*

Lit
Sometimes I wish I could fast forward into the future to see how things end up.
I maybe even sometimes flip near the end of a book to see if a character's name re-appears or if it's all going to turn out ok. (And yes, I ruined the last Harry Potter for myself that way)
When I used to read blogs, I never knew what the people meant when they said they were "crypto-blogging". I used to wonder whey they didn't just talk about whatever it was they weren't talking about. I think I'm starting to understand.
Sometimes you can't quite put it into words that will make sense anywhere outside of your own brain. ( Actually...that happens to me quite a lot. )
I spent time last week with two very different, but great guys...both of them unavailable in their own ways...both of them attractive to me in their own ways. When I realized I was attracted to a guy who was attracted back (nevermind two...) I panicked. Little old single me panicked at the idea of even considering getting into a relationship again and what that all means.
The colleague is a great guy. Funny, nice. Did I mention the non-stop laughing and all the hilarity that ensued? The inside jokes and goofing off when work was supposed to be done? It was really fun hanging out with him. Good. Fun. Oh, did I mention his girlfriend? Of three years?
Yeah.
Maybe this is someone I can add to my list of male friends. He's not single and maybe it's better that way. It was just really cool to hang out with someone and get along so well.
And life, being life, decided to show me that that couple of days hanging out with a guy was just the start of the roller coaster. Was just the part where the coaster is slowly moving up...up... up.
I've had some incredibly happy moments this week and some incredibly confusing, startlingly anxiety-filled ones. And as three separate people have told me this week after hearing me breifly explain what's going on, "I'm toast".
There was that dinner party on Sunday. And the guy my friends have been trying to set me up with for months was there. All the way from the other side of the country. Literally. And I can't even tell you what I think about him. But there's a connection and it's almost too much for me to deal with. Plus, I'm not sure our lifestyles are compatible. And to be honest, I don't think I want to talk about it. He'll hear about this site soon enough and I can't imagine how odd it would be to read about yourself in this kind of situation so I'll just leave it at this: he's handsome and fit and kind and romantic ( yes ladies, they DO exist ) and he keeps telling me he's crazy about me. (I keep telling him he's just crazy. We've agreed to disagree.)
I may be getting in way over my head here and I'm not entirely sure I know how to swim. Anyone have any water wings they can loan me? I'd like to make sure I don't drown.
I'm not sure I trust my instincts anymore and that leaves me wondering what to trust. The head? It thinks too much. The heart? It doesn't think enough.
So, you see, there's some heavy stuff. And this isn't a heavy place. I don't want it to be. Life is wonderful and amazing and oh such a joyful place and I like it that way. I like it here. I like my three readers.
So, I'm still single. Still got my bed all to myself.
Wish me well, wish me the best, but don't be surprised if you never hear me mention this guy again. Let's just pretend he doesn't exist. Kind of like my job. It doesn't exist either.
Nudge, nudge, say no more. A nudge's as good as a wink to a blind bat eh?

Curveball
So what happens when you put two shy people in the same house for a dinner party?
Nothing.
But what happens when one of the shy people phones up the other shy person and they get up enough nerve to go have coffee (chai latte please) together and actually have quite a nice time?
Well then one of them flies home to the other side of the country the very next day of course!
HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!
No, wait.. it's not actually that funny.
*sigh*
And, no, this isn't even the thing I was confused about just the other day. This is an additional confusion, hurrah!
Nothing.

Super Secret Spy Conference
The conference was good.
We learned lots of important spy things, like avoiding radioactive tea and other things I can't talk about.
I am, however, a little bit befuddled.
Spending three straight days with someone, whether they have a girlfriend or not, can mess with even the most sensible of brains. And we all know I don't have the most sensible of brains.
No, nothing happened. Hold yer horses. I'm just over-tired and want a good night's sleep before I start even attempting to figure out what I'm thinking right now. Pretend I never mentioned it.
What's new with y'all anyway?

Auto-Reply: Away From Laptop (Again)
I've just been told I'll be car-pooling with that colleague I mentioned a while back. The one I found out has a girlfriend. So, that's mildly amusing in some karmic way, no?
And, no, don't get all excited. There will not be any drunken "mishaps". I'm not that girl. I really couldn't smooch a guy who was in a relationship no matter how unhappy he was in the relationship or how many free drinks I'd downed.
Not that he's intending to smooch me or anything. I'm just saying.
So. That being said..... comment away my lovelies. Just don't expect me to publish yer comments til the weekend. I'm not even taking my laptop! Woo hoo! If you're looking for some reading, click on the names of my charming commenters and it will (usually) take you to their blog. Try it. Go on, I dare ya! Or, go check out a site that will make you laugh. Laughing is good. And fun.
Talk to you soon.
PS. That's the kind of sunset I might get to see on the ferry ride tomorrow. Nice, eh?

So Where Have I Been All Your Weekend?
(You know how there's that line "Where have you been all my life"? Yes? Well, now does the post title seem funnier? No? Are you sure? I think it does. )
Anyone remember my friend who was going to have a baby? Yes? No?
Well, guess who I got to meet this weekend?
( Hint: Very small. Cute. Squirmy. )
It was both bizarre and cool to see someone I've known for nearly half my life with their own baby.
And now I'm going to collapse into my own bed in my own house where it's very quiet (yay!) but there's no one around to fall asleep all snuggly and cute on my stomach (boo!).
Night night.

Hurry Back!
The snow's melting and the temperature's rising around here.
I have an odd mental block about posting photos of snow when there's no snow *actually* around, so I'm throwing this photo up before it all disappears.
People may not all love snow as much as I do, but they must have to admit it's pretty to look at.

How To Create an Awkward Silence in Three Easy Steps
I met him at his place and we headed off to a restaurant to meet some of his friends for dinner before the show.
After dinner, I was munching my way happily through the chocolate icing on my chocolate dessert when my buddy mentioned that he had an extra ticket for the show. He started calling some people to see if they wanted to come, and I said I didn't mind who joined us as long as it was a cute, single guy.
Well, let me tell you, the silence that came after that remark was so heated, you think I'd just suggested we all go out and poke puppies with sharp sticks.
I looked up and glanced at my buddy's friends and realized that they had all assumed I was his girlfriend. His girlfriend who just asked for him to bring along a cute, single guy.
D'oh!
My buddy hung up and looked around right as the guy next to me said, "Did you just say what I think you just said?" while everyone else stared at me.
It was awkward, so I did what any sane person would do.
I shrugged, smiled weakly, and went back to eating my dessert.
My poor buddy just looked around, got no answer from anyone, shrugged, and went back to making some calls.
Dude. I've never felt like such an accidental idiot.
I guess I just found another, previously unknown, difficult thing about having male friendships.
(Er, I should add....that's neither my buddy nor the show up there.)

Unreal-ly Beautiful
And with so many pretty pictures floating around, I couldn't just leave those pink dudes up at the top of my page so....
Best viewed as biggly as possible so you can see the trees that look like they can't quite be real.
It's Late. I Should Be Asleep.
But I'm not.
And this... this, my friends, is the result of me+laptop+bed+can't fall asleep.
The internets is like .... awesome.
Muppets, Manamana

I Am Aglow
The sunsets around here right now are stunning.
It must be something to do with the clouds and the reflection of the snow or something about the atmosphere (insert clever Science explanation here).
They've been hitting us around 4:30 and for 10 or 15 minutes the sky just glows. Everything from a golden pink to a coppery orange. It's just gorgeous.
And once the sunset is over? It gets chilly and dark very quickly. It's quite different from what usually happens around this time of year.
But it's cool.
I wanted to pull over to watch the sunset tonight, it was drool-worthy, but by the time I got home to my camera it was finished, so here's a photo from a few nights ago to give you a peek at what we're seeing.
So purty! Don't cha just wanna move here?
The title of this post, by the way, is the name of a really nice song by a good ol' Canadian gal, Sarah Harmer. Give it a listen!

Resolve
I've been going to the gym regularly for almost a year now. It wasn't a New Year's resolution, it was something I'd been meaning to do for a long time (exercise regularly) and last February was when I happened to sign up.
I've wondered for a few weeks now if I'd see any change in the people patterns at the gym since we're in the new year with its wishes and resolutions, and yesterday, I did.
I know when my gym has its quiet moments, its busier moments, and its in-between moments, so I was mildly amused at the no-parking, completely full cardio machines and well-meaning masses I encountered yesterday.
I'm happy that they all are making an effort to improve their health, or their moods,or their weight, or whatever it is that's brought them to the gym and I wish them all luck. It'll be interesting to see if the crowds thin out or if they re-distribute themselves to different times.
I don't mind the sudden influx. I live in a tourist destination town, so I'm used to the feeling of being a local who already knows the ropes. Plus, if I can't get parked, I can always walk there, or find a side street to park on. If I can't get on the cardio machine I'd like, I can run up and down the stairs or use the less popular rowing machines. And I promise I'll resist the urge to tell people to slow down before they injure something.
I'm going to sneak off to the gym now in the hopes that some of the folks from yesterday are icing sore muscles and things'll be a little calmer.

Wow
I took my camera to work with me today "just in case" I saw something I wanted to take a photo of.
And, wow, did I ever.
The light was unreal.
And, wow, did I ever.
The light was unreal.
Again, Again!
Well, we all know how much I love it when it snows, right?
And we all know that even though I live in Canadialand, it really doesn't snow that much in my town, making snow an excellently rare event, right?
Well, guess how much I love it when it snows on a morning I had booked off for a doctor's appointment which then gets re-scheduled, leaving me with the morning off to lie in bed, all cozy, watching the snow fall?
LOTS! That's how much!

To Boldly Clap, In a Room Full of Nothing *
My high school years weren't the most idyllic. I went to a high school where I never quite felt like I fit in. There were, however, some great times, some great people and some moments I still recall fondly. One happy memory is going listening to and talking about how much we liked The Tragically Hip.
You see, the Hip are our band. They're Canada's. I mean, we've got some fantastic music here and most often we're very happy to share it with the rest of the world. But the Hip? They're ours and, quite frankly, we don't care if anyone else has ever heard of them.
I first started listening to the Hip in high school. They had already put out a few albums and were huge, but their biggest (and arguably their best) were just coming out. My brother went to see them live and told me how awesome they were, and I knew one day I'd have to go see them in concert.
These guys have captured the essence of what it felt like to grow up in Canada in the past 20 years or so. Their songs talk about national events; hockey games, newsworthy stories, national heroes. Their songs talk about our prairies, our vast country, our culture. Their songs talk about things that only a Canadian, growing up in our fine country would really get. Their songs have been a soundtrack to my life. Each time they bring out a new album (and they have around 12 right now) there's a hit or a song that resonates with us and makes us sing along. Each time they bring out a new album, I think "well, maybe this one won't be good... they have to fade out eventually, right?" Not yet, and how many bands can you say that for? These guys rock consistently.
Last night, I went to a Tragically Hip concert for the first time. I've wanted to go for years. I discovered the Hip nearly 15 years ago, but at that time I wasn't a concert goer. No car, no money, no parental permission. Up until last year, this town didn't have an arena big enough for the Hip to come to, and going to Vancouver for a show isn't always feasible when you live here since you need to pay for the concert, the travel, meals and a place to stay. So last night, at our town's shiny new arena, I got to see my boys play. And, man, they blew the roof off the place.
I love concerts, big and small, but I also go to them with the understanding that the performer is touring to promote their latest album, so I went to this show fully expecting to hear all of the band's new songs, with maybe an oldie or two thrown in for good measure.
My boys blew that old concert going theory to shreds.
If I made a list of my favourite songs from my favourite albums, it's as if Gordie and the boys were playing off of that list. I mean, it can't be too hard for them to please crowds here. We've been fans for years, most of us and we know their songs very well. And, they've got so many great songs, so many fantastically popular songs. It was just awesome 'cuz they pumped out hit after hit after hit. They pulled from their early early stuff, and they pulled from their latest album. They belted out a ton of songs from the album I'd have on repeat in high school and through my first degree and they played their two best ballads.
I love this band and I'm so glad I was finally able to see them live. My brother was right, they were awesome. Not only did the Hip play a great live show, they made me damn proud to be Canadian and they played the songs from the soundtrack of my life. The songs that play during the happy scenes.
I don't know many bands that are so well known and well loved by an entire country. I mean, I'm sure not everyone loves them, but everyone knows them. And that's saying something. They're loved and known by generations of Canadians and that's pretty cool. And to top it all off? They're great!
I found my high school yearbooks last week when I was cleaning up for New Years. I flipped through them all, reading the things people had written, some names no longer meaning anything, some making me smile and wonder what they're up to now.
On the back page of my senior yearbook, my high school sweetheart had written me a note. We'd been long broken up when he wrote it, but we still cared for each other, and if I saw him today, I'd still care for him just as much. First loves can be like that.
As I read over what he had to say, I thought about the great times we'd had together, and the parties we'd gone to, especially the one at his best friend's house where the Hip was played over and over.
He ended up with a quote he said best described me, some lyrics from a Hip song; the title of this post. How fitting that he quoted The Tragically Hip. I hadn't realized it at the time, but they were our band. All of us. All of us bright, young, idealistic kids looking forward to a future we could only start to imagine. It's a scary time, high school, and I guess he wanted to remember the happy times we'd had when we were together. They last, you know, the happy memories.
So does great music.
So do The Tragically Hip.
*If I had to choose one album to recommend, this would be the one. Go buy it now

Ahhhhhhh
No matter my mood, going to the gym always makes me feel better.
And if there also happens to be a ton of eye candy there too? Well, that's just fantabulous.

Funky
I'm in a funk.
It's most likely my body and brain recovering from my evil cold, but still.
I can't think of anything to say and I don't seem to have the energy to make much of an effort.
Sorry 'bout that.
I'm going to a concert tomorrow, that should be fun.
I got new shoes... I think they hurt.
I really wish it would snow again. I like snow lots.
Sleeping is good. I like sleeping.

BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP
This is only a test.
If this was not a test, the ringing you hear in your ears would be followed by a post.
As this is only a test, I'm going to bed once it looks ok.
This concludes the test of the new Flickr/Blogger layout.
Thank you
The Claw
I'm about to switch to the "new Blogger". Not so much because I feel like it, but it annoys me to be constantly asked about it and now flickr's asking me if I've switched. So, to simplify things and reduce annoyances I'm going to switch.

That's Odd
So I thought I had posted a couple of entries over the last day or two, but I realized just now that I have *thought* about posting a couple of entries but haven't. Sorry bout that. I do that sometimes with electronic stuff.
I once had a year where I kept on phoning people to ask why they hadn't responded to my email and it turned out I had only dreamed I'd composed and sent the email and hadn't actually done it.
So. I hope you enjoyed the last couple of dream entries that I didn't actually post at all. Yay!
Soon I'll try actually posting for real.
And I'll pinch myself while I'm doing it to make sure I'm awake.

Mind Body Disconnect
It's like they have a mind of their own.
Which is odd.
Especially when they spell things in reverse.
Sometimes, my fingers are dyslexic.
But they can type my passwords faster than you can sneeze.
(Wow. That was a weird statement.)

I *LOVE* Love!
Many years ago, a guy I knew introduced me to "blogs". He sent me to the site of the first blog I ever read, that of a lovely, talented local girl named Julie.
Now, I've never met Julie, being un-brave and a tad shy, but I've smiled with her through happy times and cried along with her through challenging times.
A while ago she met (or, re-met, actually) a young man and they hit it off. Very well. And I thought, "He should marry her." And after a bit, they moved in together, and I thought "He should marry her". A year or so ago, she posted a picture of a gorgeous ring he gave her and I emailed her and said "OOOH! Is that an engagement ring?" And she giggled and said, no, just an "I love you ring". And I thought, "He should marry her."
Well, guess what? He's going to marry her!
Nothing makes me happier than two people finding each other and finding love with each other. Yay!
Congratulations, Julie and Tyler!
Ain't love grand?

Um Yeah
Still sick here, got nothin much to say, sorry.
Found out that a couple of big name tv corps are streaming this season's shows for free on their sites and all I did yesterday was sleep and watch five episodes of Ugly Betty.
Today I'm going to see if I can make it off the couch. Have a good one.

The Gift That Keeps on Giving
I hope y'all had a good Christmas or whatnot.
I've got a couple of days off, yay!
I did, however, pick up a winter cold from the kids that were running around this weekend. It's good that they've learned to share, though, eh?
Naptime.

Happy

Giving Notice In Advance
Please excuse any lack of posting you might encounter in the next week or so.
We're having Christmas over here on the Island this year and family is starting to head over. Specifically, my poor brother and his family who are escaping from North Vancouver where they've had a month that's included a "boil water" advisory,a cold snap, a road closing, tree breaking snow storm and lastly, a multi-day power outage.
I'm not saying I won't be posting... just that if I don't, you know where I am: stealing Christmas goodies from my Mom's freezer while she's not looking!
PS. I meant to post this last night but fell asleep first. So the date's from last night even though TEEEEEEECHNICALLY I'm posting it this morning.

Distance Makes the Heart Something Something
So, I've been in a long distance relationship more than once. I've never been in the same *type* of long distance relationship, but so far, none of them have lasted.
Obviously. (Me being single and all)
The way I've experienced it, there are three main types of long distance relationships, each with their own challenges. Let's take a little look-see, shall we?
Victoria's Long Distance Relationship Primer
1. Started out that way. - In this situation, two people go in to the relationship knowing they do not live in the same place. (Um, why would anyone do this? Well, love is stoopid.) Unless someone is willing to move, this relationship will have to end. This relationship involves a lot of travel and phone calls. (I bought a new suitcase during this one. It's pretty.)
In my case, neither of us could leave our jobs to move. Or, maybe more to the point, neither of us would.
2. Going away for a while. - In this case, the relationship starts, and then one person needs to go away, with an eventual return date. Depending on the length of absence, arrangements can be made and the relationship can survive. This relationship involves a lot of phone calls and possibly some travel. Also, a clear understanding of expectations and what/where the relationship is. (Really really big phone bill on this one. He was very far away.)
In my case, the relationship survived nearly a year apart. It was the return that killed it. Bummer.
3. Has to leave. - Here, the relationship starts and then one person has to leave, with no foreseeable return date. This, again, is a move-or-end-it kind of situation. (I learned how to text message. It's fun)
In my case, our relationship was fairly new and he had a fantastic job opportunity elsewhere. He left, we tried it for a while, but as he put it, he "wanted to wake up next to the person he loved every morning". Fair enough.
I'm not saying long distance relationships can't work, just that they haven't worked out for me in the long run.
Which makes me wonder why I'd consider dating a guy who lives across the country. I mean, not that we're dating or going to date, but he'll be visiting in January and we'll be hanging out. (With our friends. Who introduced us and may be encouraging some flirting. Maybe.) So, I ask myself, why even hang out with an attractive guy who may never live in this town?
It's probably the idea that he *might* someday live here. Or something.
I'm an idiot, right?
Obviously. (Me being single and all)

Ghost in the Machine
Biz. Arre. This week I've been unable to sign in to comment on other people's blogger blogs.
I've tried singing in as me.
I've tried signing in as other.
I've tried signing in as anonymous.
Nothing. Couldn't sign in, no matter what I tried. It was weird.
Then, this morning I tried again to leave a comment and the most bizarre thing happened.
Where it usually says "Victoria-your sign in name" it said my Mother's name, which shares three of the same letters as Victoria, but not at all in the same order.
So I rushed over to my blogger profile to make sure I didn't somehow inadvertently enter my Mom's name or use it as a password or something.
Nope.
So I went back to the original site where I was, once again, able to sign in as Victoria.
GAH!
I don't think it was a trick of my imagination or my eyes, but I have no other explanation for it.
It was creepy. And weird.
I need me some Ghostbusters.

Dear Mister Perfect
Sometime, some years from now, you will be walking out of a jewellery store with diamonds for me.
Thank you, they're lovely.

Sweet
Another major wind storm hit the Island last night and as my office has no power ( one of the only grids in town that's out ! ) we all just got sent home!
Mother Nature must loooooooove me. First, a snow day, now a power outage day?
Majorly cool.
Although, we're quickly running out of upright trees aroud here.

The MTV Generation Is Teh Cool
I just heard the best thing ever.
I was in the line at the store getting some wrapping stuff when the girl in front of me turned to her friend and said, in all seriousness,
"Do you know how to use matches? I can't find a lighter."
It took everything I had not to burst out laughing.
Awesome.

Seriously?
My Mom and I were talking the other day and she told me that if a guy isn't begging me to go out for him, he's not worth considering.
(Keep in mind that my Mom has my best interests in mind and means the best. So, no Mom bashing. At all.)
I'm just wondering, how much truth is there in her (slightly exaggerated) statement?
Think about it this way... why shouldn't I only go out with guys who really really really want to go out with me?
Of COURSE I should go out with those guys. I'm just not sure how to tell them apart from the guys who only kind of want to go out with me.
So, what's the deal non-single guys? How did you make your lady know that you really wanted to ask her out and date her. How did you "beg"? Or, did you actually beg? Cuz, that's a story I'd like to hear!

This Service Temporarily Unavailable
A couple of years ago, my brother accused me of only getting into relationships where the guy was, in some way, unavailable.
I didn't have much of a comeback, seeing as I was in my second long-distance relationship in a row and, as a rule, guys who don't live in the same town as you are unavailable in a noticeable way.
His statement has always irked me, in a "nuh uh" kind of way, (You know, your brother tells you you were found in a box and all you can come up with is, "NUH UH!", or maybe an "I'm telling!") but I'm starting to wonder if he may have been accurate.
See, there are three guys that are remote boyfriend possibilities at the moment. Very remote, but still. One of them lives on the other side of the continent and is hoping to eventually move back here. Another has a girlfriend at the moment and the third is an intern, therefore younger than I am and probably not appropriate dating material work-wise. Which makes me wonder if my brother was right.
Am I interested in these guys because they're unavailable and, therefore, safe? Does knowing the relationship wouldn't work or wouldn't last make things easier for me somehow? Am I really that messed up, or is my brother just being mean?
I mean, I'm pretty sure I wasn't found in a box, my Mom swears she went through labour. Maybe he's just a big meanie and I should tell on him.
Again.

Ho Ho YaHoooooo
This year, my family decided we'd pull a name out of a hat and buy gifts for that one person.
We each also put out a list of suggestions, which really helps with the shopping!
The person I drew sent out their list today and I am thrilled to say I've just finished my Christmas shopping.
Without leaving my house.
Or my couch.
And, most importantly, without having to put on any underwear!
Woo Hooo!
I love you, Internets. Will you marry me?

Spam, Spam, Spam, Eggs and Spam
I usually just delete spam without looking at it, but this one's first line caught my eye. Once you get past that first line, it's a terrifically entertaining piece of writing, and since I've got a whole lot of not much to say at this moment, I thought I'd share with you.
I dare you not to laugh! Or chortle. Or, at least, roll your eyes.

Things that Make You Go Hmmmmmmm
So there hasn't been much going on around here lately. Which is why the phone call I didn't get was interesting.
That's right. The phone call I *didn't* get.
See, almost ten years ago, the guy I thought I'd spend the rest of my life with ended the relationship and asked me to move out. Broken heart and all that, ya know? I ran into him last summer and we caught up a little.
Turns out he's married now with an infant child and happily ever afterness.
Which makes me wonder why his number turned up on my call display this weekend while I was away.
That's a little odd, no?

Good Timing
I'm taking off for a couple of days so don't panic if your comment doesn't get approved right away and all that good stuff.
Now that NaBloPoMo is officially over, I can take off and not worry about internet access, which is kind of nice.
My email checking obsession will probably get me on a computer over the next couple of days regardless, but just in case, have a nice weekend all!
*Hugs*

Danger, Danger!
Today, I'm home again, recovering on the couch and flicking through blogs I haven't had the time for lately.
On Miss Zoot's recommendation, I'm reading through this gal's NaBloPoMo posts about her relationship with her husband. Not an easy time for her, but an engaging read.
The thing that's scaring me, though, is the strong urge I'm now having to call up my ex. To call him up and try to relive the good parts. (Having, for this moment, conveniently forgotten the completely stinky parts.)
This, ladies, is why you must delete his phone number. I couldn't call him if I wanted to. Can't. Rememer. His. Number. Probably better that way, especially considering this was the last time I heard from him. Someone remind me why I'd want to talk to him again?
It's hard though. Mind v/s heart v/s reality v/s what *could* have been and all that.
To do:
Write Lines: I will not think warm thoughts about the ex. ( copy out 100 times )
